The central issue in our work is the individual counselling interview, because every single case is special and couldn’t be responded with one single sentence.
No. We are peers who are helping peers without giving any information to the employer. Sometimes there are situation in which the chief of the fleet might suggest an official interview with AntiSkid. Followed by a feedback if any cooperation has taken place, but without telling the content of this cooperation or giving any further information.
In general you should trust your AME completely – or you should look for another one. Owing to the fact that AntiSkid is well known among all AME’s there’s no need to keep it in secret. This programme works together with peers, which act as guides and with your AME, therapists and specialised physicians.
Yes. Every pilot is legally bound to tell every notifiable diseases to the LBA, as appropriate together with his AME. But this doesn’t mean automatically that you employer gets in touch with it. All departments of LBA have to keep official discretion as well. In such cases it is worked with anonymous entries in your medical as the like „SIC“.
Every programme will be fitted invidually for the person affected. Usually involved by: an in-patient stay for several weeks in a special clinic, regular examinations by physicians, group-meetings with other pilots affected, appointments with therapists and a close contact with a guide of AntiSkid.
The first meeting will stay a counselling interview! No information will be forwarded, as long as the peer does not agree it in explicit. During this meeting the members of AntiSkid will have a sit in with the peer and listen to his history and looking mutually for solutions.
The AntiSkid programme is a peer-support programme from pilots for pilots. (male and female). For flight-attendants there is a similar one, called “Safety Belt”. (LINK). For all other departments the disciplinary supervisors are the right ones to contact.
If in doubt just talk to him. A smell of alcohol is a hint for the alcohol level in blood is by 0,5 per mille at least! The royal road in those situation is then always, not to have this colleague inflight as long as this situation hasn’t been cleared completely.
If one peer allow another peer to fly under influence of alcohol or drugs, he is as well guilty of an offence! After the peer has reported himself to crew contact for being sick he should be admitted by AntiSkid. In case of not getting in contact with us, we would give notice to the “informer”, that the person didn’t call us.
But then the “informer” has only the possibility left to do, to get this information to the fleet manager.
The same as above mentioned: if in doubt just talk to him and bring it forward to AntiSkid. We also give advice to relatives of a person affected.
Yes. We have contact to psychologists which take care with management of threats.
According to European regulation 1178/2011(MED055/060) and further rules, behavioural disorders and addiction of substances (like alcohol, drugs, medicaments) lead to be unfit for flight.
Due to participating in one of AntiSkid programmes, the opportunity is offered to get back in the seat within short time. The offer of treatment meet every authorities’ requirements, which are forced to be fulfilled to regain the medical.
To calculate the maximum daily value of alcohol it depends of your age, weight, sex and your health condition. In general you could use the standard values for low-risk consumption of alcohol:
24g alcohol per day with men.
This equals approx. 0,5 l beer; resp. 0,2 l wine per day.
With women the value is at 12g alcohol/ per day.
This equals 0,3 l beer; resp. 0,1 l wine per day.
Attention should be paid to the fact, that consumption of 20g alcohol daily is less harmful than a consumption of 140g once a week, but weekly!
As being a pilot we are defeated to another limited value. Up from a alcohol level in blood of 1,6 per mille we loose our “fitness to fly ” for ever! This value can only be achieved with a high and acquired tolerance in alcohol consumption. So then it is a matter of risky consumption or abuse with alcohol. This leads to unfit for inflight!
An addiction is a certain pattern of behaviour which is described like having an irresistible and growing desire for achieving a definite state of emotions and experience. To be enslaved to a habit. In general every human could get addicted to something. Addiction is not limited to certain substances, every kind of human behaviour can lead to an addiction (e.g. workaholic, addiction to gambling, addictive- eating, sexual addiction).
Every addiction is created by the process: experience - repetition - habituation - abuse.
